In the league matches, Tim and Fay from Brown Jack A were playing Oscar and Bob from the Masons this week, and in the first game Bob noticed that every time a card was turned up, it seemed to be just the right one for Tim’s hand. “Did you walk across a field to get here?” asked Bob, “Cos you stepped in something!” Tim’s luck continued and the score went from 1 nil, to 2 nil, to 3 nil, until Tim and Fay eventually won the Beer. “Never mind crossing a field,” said Bob, “I think you walked around a cowshed with your shoes and socks off”!

Unfortunately a match had to be postponed this week. This sometimes can’t be avoided, but one of the consequences of this, is that working out how well your teams are doing in the league tables can be difficult once this has occurred.
For this reason I have added a new table called Insights, shown besides the usual league tables. The Insights tables show team positions based on each team’s percentage of games and matches won, rather than the actual number.
This way you can make an approximate comparison of how well a team is doing that’s played 5 matches for example, compared to a team that has only played 4. At the end of the season the League tables are the only ones that matter, but the Insights tables can give you an insight into how each team is performing compared to your team, regardless of whether they have played the same number of matches as you.

Bill of Plough Inn B has been leading his team for many years, and over the decades they have represented many pubs… but always as a B team. A very long time ago (at which pub is lost in the mist of time) the A team folded, but Bill’s team proudly continued on as the B team. Later another team joined the pub and became the new A team, but as they were inexperienced, the A team won the league’s wooden spoon that year. As “winners” of the trophy it was up to the A team to get the wooden spoon engraved, but whoever they sent to the engravers just assumed that they must be the B team, and got the trophy incorrectly engraved. And so Bill’s team are shown as winning the wooden spoon one more time than they actually have! This week’s League results are shown below:

Karen D of Plough A won her singles match against Alan B of Bakers B.
In the Pairs: Dave & Jason of Plough A were granted a walkover by Mike & Ian of Bakers A due to unforeseen circumstances.
And in The Retrac: Bakers A beat the Blue Boar 5-4, meaning Bakers A are through to the Final. They will play either Blue Boar Piglets or Plough Inn B.
We are four weeks in and The Masons Arms are the only team left in the Main League with a 100% win rate on their matches. But in the Beer League both the Brown Jackettes and Plough Inn A have won 4 out of 4.
At the end of the Season it will all be about the Games For column though (see last week’s League Update for an explanation) and the teams in the top halves of the tables are still very close together.
